Words sometimes matter. Behavior always matters. Cultural competence exists in between words and behaviors. It’s treacherous territory. Because in between words and behaviors disagreement flourishes. In the United States, no disagreement is larger, no topic more culturally treacherous, no incompetency more apparent, than in our conversation about race.
