NJ Coalition for Adoption Reform and Education (NJCARE) is affiliated with the American Adoption Congress (www.americanadoptioncongress.org) and is a grassroots organization that supports honesty in adoption through educational outreach and legislative advocacy. We are dedicated to the proposition that all persons are created equal and should have the same civil rights under the law. The NJ Adoptees’ Birthright Act was signed into law in May 2014 and implemented in January 2017. Individuals born or adopted in NJ may request a copy of their original birth certificate from the Registrar of Vital Statistics Office at http://www.nj-care.org/adopted-persons/ We have learned by experience that persons adopted, but not born, in NJ may find that their original birth certificate was not filed in Trenton. Birthparents who relinquished a child born or adopted in NJ may apply to the Registrar to file their preference re: contact at https://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/adoption/
