The sex abuse scandal in American girls’ gymnastics that recently came to light presents parents with a valuable teaching moment. This scandal should finally discourage parents from repeating the ineffective phrase to keep their kids safe: Don’t talk to strangers. This admonition doesn’t work because the overwhelming majority of abusers are parents, relatives, family friends or other individuals known to the child.
