Our Child: Preparation for Parenting in Adoption

  • Hallenbeck, Carol A.

Many couples are fortunate and experience excellent adoption agency home studies as part of their preparation for parenting.  Other couples go through home studies but are unable to fully absorb what is being presented.  For some, the underlying fears of being rejected for placement hinder learning.  Other are so anxious to provide the “right” answers that they cannot fully assimilate all that is presented.  Still other couples adopt privately, and sometimes receive no formal preparation at all.   Regardless of which of the former mentioned groups a couple might find themselves to be in, they all should be allowed and encouraged to seek additional support from their communities, support which is given spontaneously to pregnant families.
