When Love Hurts: Protecting Black Mothers October 03, 2025

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Free!

Pregnancy should bring joy, not fear. Yet for too many Black birthing people, domestic violence doesn’t stop during pregnancy — it escalates. Intimate partner violence is one of the leading causes of death during pregnancy and postpartum.

In this 60-minute workshop, advocates and social workers Michelle Valiukenas and Laura Valiukenas will shed light on this hidden crisis. Drawing on lived experience, professional expertise, and current research, they’ll guide a compassionate, practical conversation on:

  • Recognizing the signs of intimate partner violence during pregnancy and postpartum
  • Understanding how abuse, stress, and financial hardship can impact maternal and infant health
  • Learning how to respond with care and provide support that saves lives

This event is designed for parents, caregivers, doulas, nurses, and anyone dedicated to supporting Black mothers and birthing people with safety and dignity.
