Individuals with Developmental Disabilities are likely to experience some form of trauma during their lifetime. There is often a failure to recognize the effects of trauma on people with DD and the signs of past experiences may be overlooked or untreated. This session will explore the types of traumatic events that are common and why people with Disabilities are more at risk. Additionally, the connection between trauma and its impact on an individual’s biology and behavior will be discussed. Participants will be provided with an overview of trauma-informed approaches to support healing and recovery including therapeutic interventions, coping strategies, and positive identity development.
